Recognizing romance scams
Sadly, some people join dating sites only to take advantage of sincere, kind-hearted believers. Protecting yourself is not a lack of faith, it is the wisdom Scripture calls us to exercise.
Red flags to watch for
- Anyone asking for money, transport money, hospital bills, visa fees, gift cards or cryptocurrency, no matter how believable the story.
- Very fast declarations of love, often within days, followed by talk of emergencies.
- Pressure to move the conversation to WhatsApp, Telegram or another app quickly.
- Refusing to join a live video call, or their camera never working.
- Stories that do not add up: shifting ages, locations, jobs or faith background.
- Requests for your passwords, bank details, one-time codes or photos of your ID.
- Urgency and secrecy: act now, tell no one, keep it between us.
Safe next steps
- Take your time and pray for wisdom before moving forward with anyone.
- Verify what you are told through a live video call before trusting it.
- Tell a trusted friend, family member, pastor or elder when a relationship becomes serious.
- Never send money under any circumstances, and never share codes, bank details or ID documents.
- Meet in person only in a public place, and tell someone where you are going.
- Report anything suspicious right away using the Report button on a profile or conversation. Reporting is confidential and helps protect other members.
You are never obligated to send money or private information to someone you have met online, not even someone you are courting. A sincere brother or sister in Christ will respect your boundaries.
